At COLC, Chapter Officer Leadership Conference, the Live Oak FFA officer team went to Mountain Meadows to learn leadership skills and bond as a team through obstacle courses and workshops.


Live Oak FFA had a strong past week with Regional Speaking finalists, State Degree recipients, a Star Award, a Scholarship Winner, and the election of a Superior Region Officer. The week started off with three of our members qualifying for the Regional Leadership Speaking Contests with Abigail Davis and Orrin Jones participating in the Extemporaneous Speaking Contest, and Asgar Khan participating in the Prepared Speaking Contest. Asgar placed 5th barely missing a trip to the state finals, but Abigail Davis placed 3rd which qualified her for the State Finals. Then came the regional meeting where four of our members earned there State Degrees; Cassidy Davis, Hannah Mallet, Natasia Selvidge, and Orrin Jones.  This is the highest degree California FFA can bestow on its members. At the Superior Region meeting our chapter reporter, Shelby Foster won the Sierra Buttes Section Star Reporter for her hard work in informing her chapter and community about the FFA. Abigail Davis was also honored to win the Ted Gregg Memorial Scholarship for her hard work. Last but not least Orrin Jones who was this past year’s Superior Region Sentinel was yet again elected to a Regional office as Superior Region President of 2017-2018.

Last night 8 member of the Live Oak FFA competed against 15 schools in the Sierra Buttes FFA Section in a variety of speaking contest.  Lizzie Allan and Bella Fredericks both competed in the Creed Speaking Contest.  Janet Enriquez and Mackenzie Vrablick both competed in the Impromptu Speaking Contest.  Orrin Jones, Natasia Selvidge and Abby Davis all competed in the Extemporaneous Speaking Contest.   Asgar Khan Competed in the Prepared Speaking Contest.  Each school can bring up to 4 members for each contest, which makes each contest very competitive with most of the contest having as many as 30 contestants.  5 of our 8 members advanced to the final rounds, with three Live Oak FFA members qualifying for the Regional Contest in a couple of weeks.  Abby Davis, Orrin Jones and Asgar Khan all placed high enough to qualify for the regional competition on March 15th at Chico State.

17 members of the Live Oak FFA went to Sutter High School to compete in 3 different contest.  The three contests were Agriculture Cooperative and Marketing, Best Informed Greenhand and Record Book.  Keri Lafnear was the 3rd High Individual and she placed 5th as a team of one.  In the CO-OP and Marketing Contest Faith Luquin was the 4th high individual, Joe Fredericks was the 2nd high individual, and Michael Quillin was the 1st high individual.  As a team Live Oak placed 1st in the CO-OP and Marketing Contest. 

On Saturday November 26th.  5 members of the Live Oak FFA attended the Los Molinos FFA Speaking Contest.  Mackenzie Vrablick and Janet Enriquez both participated in the Impromtu Speaking Contest.  Orrin Jones, Asgar Khan, and Natasia Selvidge all participated in the Extemporaneous Speaking Contest.  Asgar Khan placed 2nd  and Orrin Jones placed 1st.

30 Live Oak FFA members attended the Sierra Buttes Sectional Opening and Closing Speaking Contest Last night at River Valley High School.  The contest is a speaking competition in which students take on the role of FFA officers and run a mock opening and closing for a meeting.  Each officer has part to say related to their individual office.  The competition is based on the memorization of what they must say and their speaking ability.   The Sierra Buttes Section is made up of 15 surrounding schools.  Each school can have multiple teams.  For example, the advanced level had 24 teams.  There are 3 levels of competition.  Novice, for 9th and 10th graders, Advanced, for 11th and 12th graders, and the chapter officers from each school.  Awards were given for the top teams in each level and for outstanding officers for each level.  Live Oak’s Novice Team B placed second.  Lizzy Allan was selected at the Outstanding Novice President overall, and Lili Crabb was selected as the Outstanding Novice Treasurer.  The Advanced Team B also placed 2nd, and Asgar Khan was the Outstanding Advanced President overall.
